Hospital and Rehab Sitters in Fort Myers: Keeping Your Loved One Company

September 28, 2026

Nobody wants a loved one alone in the hospital

A hospital or rehab stay is stressful at any age. For an older adult, and especially someone living with memory loss, it can be frightening. Unfamiliar rooms, alarms, new faces and interrupted sleep can lead to confusion, restlessness and falls. Families want to be there around the clock, but between work, distance and their own health, that is rarely possible.

A hospital sitter, sometimes called a companion or bedside sitter, fills that gap.

What a sitter does

A sitter stays at your loved one's bedside so they are not alone. The role is companionship and watchfulness, not medical treatment. A sitter can:

  • Offer a calm, familiar presence and gentle reorientation when someone is confused
  • Help keep your loved one from climbing out of bed or pulling at lines
  • Alert the nursing staff right away when something needs attention
  • Help with comfort, such as fluids, repositioning or a walk when allowed
  • Keep the family updated on how the day or night went

The hospital's own nurses and doctors remain fully in charge of medical care. A sitter works alongside them, never in place of them.

Hospital, rehab and assisted living

Families in Fort Myers, Cape Coral and the surrounding area use sitters in several settings:

  • Hospitals, especially overnight or after surgery
  • Rehab and skilled nursing stays, where staff care for many residents at once
  • Assisted living and memory care, when a resident needs more one-on-one time than the community provides

Every facility has its own rules about outside sitters. Before a shift starts, check with the charge nurse or the facility's administrator so everyone is on the same page.

When to consider a sitter

  • Your loved one has dementia or becomes confused in unfamiliar places
  • They are at risk of falling or have already had a fall
  • The family cannot be there overnight
  • You simply want someone there so you can sleep, work or travel with peace of mind

How Gulfside can help

Gulfside Living Healthcare Services is a Florida-licensed nurse registry (AHCA #30213171) based in Cape Coral. We refer trained caregivers, including home health aides and certified nursing assistants, who work as independent contractors. Every caregiver's certification, background screening and professional liability insurance is verified before they are referred.

Your family chooses the caregiver and directs the care. When your loved one is ready to come home, we can also help with care at home, including overnight care and registered nurse visits.
